OptiLight IPL Dry Eye Therapy
FDA approved light therapy that treats the root cause of evaporative dry eye
Dry eye is rarely a tear quantity problem. For most patients it begins in the meibomian glands, the small oil glands along the eyelid margin that release the lipid layer holding tears in place. When those glands become clogged or inflamed, tears evaporate within seconds and the eye responds with burning, grittiness, fluctuating vision, and paradoxically, watering.
Lumenis OptiLight delivers calibrated pulses of intense pulsed light to the cheeks and lower eyelids. The light is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels that carry inflammatory mediators to the lid margin, closing them off at the source. It also reduces Demodex mite populations and liquefies hardened oil so the glands can express normally again.
Because it addresses inflammation rather than masking symptoms, relief tends to build across the treatment series and hold for months afterward.
What a treatment session looks like
Your provider places protective shields over the eyes and applies a cooling gel to the treatment area. A handpiece then delivers a sequence of light pulses across the cheeks and along the lower lid margin. Most patients describe a warm snap similar to a rubber band, and the light portion takes about ten to fifteen minutes.
Immediately afterward the meibomian glands are expressed manually so the newly softened oil can be cleared. There is no downtime. Some patients notice mild redness for an hour or two, and makeup can be reapplied the same day.
A standard course is four sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, followed by maintenance every six to twelve months. Because IPL responds to pigment, settings are adjusted for your skin type and sun exposure is limited before and after each visit.

OptiLight targets the inflammation driving meibomian gland dysfunction, delivering durable relief rather than temporary lubrication.

Most patients complete four sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, then return for maintenance every six to twelve months depending on how their glands respond.
Most patients describe a brief warm snap with each pulse. A cooling gel is applied first and the light portion of the visit lasts roughly ten to fifteen minutes.
OptiLight is considered an elective procedure and is not covered by vision or medical insurance. It is offered as a cash pay service and we are happy to review pricing during your dry eye evaluation.
IPL is appropriate for most patients with evaporative dry eye and lighter to medium skin tones. A dry eye evaluation confirms candidacy and screens for recent sun exposure, photosensitizing medications, and active skin infection.
